George Kittle: I got hurt on a hip-drop tackle, don’t think it’s a high ankle sprain

San Francisco tight end George Kittle didn’t sound overly concerned about his ankle injury after Monday night’s win over the Colts, but he didn’t appreciate either the way he was tackled in the game or the quality of the field he played against in Indianapolis.

“My level of concern? I don’t think it’s a high ankle sprain, so we’ll take it day by day and go from there,” Kittle said.

Kittle said he suffered the injury during an illegal hip tackle in the second quarter. He also said artificial turf at Lucas Oil Stadium is a problem.

“This happened in the second quarter,” Kittle said. “I felt like my hip fell off and my ankle got stuck in the grass or turf, cork turf, really weird field. Trying to wrap it up, going into the third quarter, it really got worse from there. If I can’t run fast or plant the ball, I think it’s better to let some other tight end make plays out there.”

Kittle caught the ball 7 times for 115 yards and 1 touchdown, including two catches for 37 yards in the third quarter. He can still play at a high level after recovering from injury. That appears to be good news for Kittle heading into Sunday’s game against the Bears.
