Four NFL head coach firings increase the total of openings to six

A rundown of NFL head coaching firings, with three Black Monday firings and one Sunday night bringing the number of vacancies to six:

Cardinals, Jonathan Gannon

Arizona entered the season with high hopes of competing in the NFC West, but ended up with just three wins and one of the worst records in franchise history. Sunday’s 37-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams was the team’s ninth straight loss and 14th in 15 games. Gannon went 15-36 in three seasons.

Raiders, Pete Carroll

Carroll, the NFL’s oldest coach at 74, won two Super Bowls in 14 years with Seattle and two national championships in nine years with Southern California, but he hasn’t enjoyed the success he has. The Raiders went 3-14 in Carroll’s lone season and suffered a 10-game losing streak before Sunday’s 14-12 win over Kansas City.

Browns, Kevin Stefanski

Two straight wins at the end of the regular season couldn’t save Stefanski, who was 5-12 this season and 46-58 in six years. He led the Browns to the playoffs in 2020 and 2023 and was the Associated Press Coach of the Year in both seasons. But he could never lock down a franchise quarterback through 13 starts, including seven over the past two seasons.

Falcons, Raheem Morris

Under Morris, the Falcons posted back-to-back 8-9 records and ended the season with four straight wins and a three-way tie for first place in the NFC South. This winning streak came after the team was eliminated from the playoffs. Morris served as the Falcons’ interim coach for the final 11 games of 2020 after Dan Quinn was fired, returning after serving as the Rams’ defensive coordinator last year.

Giants, Brian Daboll

Daboll was fired on Nov. 10 after the Giants lost eight of their first 10 games. After an upset victory over defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia, the team suffered four straight losses, including one to Denver, when the Giants blew an 18-point lead with six minutes remaining. Daboll led the Giants to the playoffs in his first season, but has since gone 11-33 and finished with a 20-40-1 record.

Titans, Brian Callahan

Callahan was the first coach to be fired on Oct. 14 after the Titans lost five of their first six games. Callahan has a 4-19 record, including a 10-game losing streak. He relinquished game-calling duties after an 0-3 start, a sign of things to come. Of the 241 NFL coaches who have coached at least 20 games or more since the merger in 1970, Callahan ranks 237th with a .174 winning percentage.
