Former Packers CB Nate Hobbs finds a new home

Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Nate Hobbs found a new home in his first week of free agency. The Packers announced Wednesday that Hobbs will sign a one-year contract worth up to $4.5 million with the San Francisco 49ers, according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

Regardless, he quickly stood up.

Hobbs signed a four-year, $48 million contract with the Packers last March, but it only lasted one season. He was released before the team had to pay a $6.5 million roster bonus this week.

Instead of heading to Green Bay to learn Jonathan Gannon’s new defense, Hobbs will head to San Francisco to play for new 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. The 49ers played over 500 snaps with Upton Stout in the slot in 2025, so it’s possible Hobbs could be San Francisco’s slot defender in 2026.

Hobbs needs to return from injury in 2026. He suffered three different knee injuries in 2025, one of which required surgery early in training camp and ended up playing in just 11 games. He only played 358 snaps in total, and the Packers paid him $18.2 million.

According to PFF, Hobbs had 17 receptions on 25 targets for 239 yards in coverage, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. His target passer rating is 125.3.

Hobbs ended up playing more than 20 snaps in six games for the Packers.

The Packers’ relationship with Hobbs isn’t over yet. He was released after June 1, so his cap number remains on the books until then. The Packers will clear nearly $9 million of the cap hit by June 2 while allowing $4 million in dead money to hit the cap in 2026 and another $8 million to hit the cap in 2027.

The Packers are not expected to face Hobbs and the 49ers in 2026.
