Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles offered words of encouragement to Denver Broncos fans after Bonix suffered a broken ankle following Saturday’s divisional playoff win over the Buffalo Bills.
The Broncos will face the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game without backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham, which would appear to hurt their chances of advancing to the Super Bowl. However, Foles reminded Broncos fans that the Patriots have had issues with backup quarterbacks in the past in championship game-type games.
“One positive in the game against the Patriots is that they struggled with a backup quarterback in a championship-type game,” Foles wrote, offering comfort while also taking a dig at a former rival.

Foles started for the Eagles against the Patriots in Super Bowl LI after replacing the injured Carson Wentz in Week 15 of the 2017-18 season. Wentz suffered a torn ACL against the Los Angeles Rams, ending his season. Foles took over Philadelphia’s remaining three regular-season games and led the Eagles to playoff wins over the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings.
In that Super Bowl, Foles threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Eagles to a 41-33 upset victory. He also caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from tight end Trey Burton on the famous “Philly Special” misdirection play. The 11-year veteran will forever be a legend in Philadelphia for his play.
However, despite the sentiment, the comparison between Foles and Stidham may not hold much water. As mentioned before, Foles started three games and appeared in seven games during the 2017-18 season. He also has five previous NFL seasons of experience, starting 36 games.

Stidham played six seasons in the NFL but started only four games. It was the fewest starts by any quarterback in the conference championship game. In four games with the Broncos over the past two seasons, he has not thrown a pass. But maybe Broncos coach Sean Payton and offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi will add “Philly Special” to the playbook, just in case.
Derek Meyer expresses sympathy for Bo Nix
Following Sunday’s divisional playoff win over the Houston Texans, Patriots quarterback Derek Meyer shared some thoughts on Knicks’ season-ending injury.

“This news is heartbreaking,” Meyer told reporters. “For what kind of player he is, what kind of person he is… I pray for Beau. He’s a great player in this league. Looking forward to playing him.”
Meyer said he got to know Nix and his family well during the preparations for the 2024 NFL Draft, in which both players were selected in the first round.
The two quarterbacks met in the 2022 Holiday Bowl, with Meyer leading North Carolina and Nix quarterbacking Oregon State. The Ducks defeated the Tar Heels 28-27 despite Meyer throwing two touchdown passes and Nix throwing two touchdown passes.
