Flood Watch issued for Nashville, Middle Tennessee before strong storms

It will rain, and hard.

The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for 31 counties, primarily in middle Tennessee, including Nashville, on the morning of January 9 and 10. The area could receive 1 to 3.5 inches of rainfall.

The Nashville Meteorological Department said on January 8, “There will be showers tonight, and heavier rainfall will occur on Friday. The heaviest rainfall will occur Friday night, with total rainfall of 2 to 3 inches in most areas, with locally heavier rainfall possible. Heavy downpours may cause flash flooding in streets and low-lying areas. Flooding of small streams, especially tributaries of the Duck River, is possible.”

The weather service said there is a low chance of severe thunderstorms from storm systems moving into the area, but these storms could produce heavy rainfall and strong gusty winds.

Meteorologists expect the warm front to bring the first round of rain overnight and in the morning. The front could then stall east of Nashville.

“The severe threat on Friday remains uncertain, with questions surrounding limited instability and marginal failure rates,” the weather service said. “That being said, there will be strong shear, allowing some storms to become stronger to severe and producing a low-end tornado threat.”

Once the rain stops, be prepared for overnight temperatures to plummet to freezing and even reach highs in the low 40s.
