Final shot sends Westerly to girls state title game. Here’s who hit it.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Macy Antoch didn’t think twice with the game hanging in the balance.

She is very open. Time has almost passed. The only option is to shoot.

Westerly prevailed in the semifinals of the inaugural girls basketball state tournament at the Ryan Center. Antoch drained a 3-pointer from the right wing to lift the Bulldogs to a dramatic 52-49 victory over Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon.

“I knew time was running out,” Antok said. “Someone had to step up and shoot, so that’s what I did.”

Anne Hurd made a layup from the right side and the Patriots chased the score to 49-49. Westley called a timeout with 22.7 seconds left in the game. Portsmouth switched from a 2-3 zone defense to directly defending Westerly, and the Bulldogs quickly adopted a different offensive strategy. Santanaa Hamelin passed the ball from a key two-step inside to the outside, and Antoch hit a jumper with four seconds left.

“We had to make adjustments with the game on the line,” Antok said. “We just did what we’ve been practicing.”

The Patriots (18-5) refused to go on the road against the top seed, taking a 46-45 lead on Haley Hurd’s counterattack with 2:32 left in the game and tying the game twice since. Violet Silvia’s second of two free throws made it 47-47, and Hurd’s basket forced Portsmouth into overtime.

“We’re really not used to it,” Antok said. “Now that we have that experience, it’s good. Our team has been working hard.”
