Farabee’s short-handed goal in the 3rd period lifts the Flames to a 3-2 win over the Sharks

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Joel Farabee scored on a shorthanded goal at 6:53 of the third period to break a tie and lift the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.

Morgan Frost and Matvey Gridin each scored their 12th goal of the season for the Flames (22 wins, 26 draws, 6 losses). The Flames overcame two games of one-goal deficit and ended their five-game losing streak.

Will Smith and Adam Gaudette scored for the Sharks (27-22-4), who have lost two straight and four of seven games.

Alex Nedelkovic saved 39 shots for the Sharks, while Dustin Wolfe made 23 saves for the Flames.

Wolfe’s best goal came against MacLean Celebrini, when the star forward had a solo pass in front of the net with 21 seconds remaining, and he used his pad to block the shot.

Celebrini’s three-game winning streak was ended (three goals, four assists).

Just 15 seconds after teammate Nazem Kadri was penalized for a slashing penalty, Farabee broke a 2-all tie with Calgary’s NHL-leading eighth shorthanded goal. Mikael Backlund’s slap shot missed the net, but the rebound went forward and Farbee’s backhand beat Nedeljkovic’s pads.

It was Calgary’s first win since trading defenseman Rasmus Andersen. Since the trade, the Flames have a record of 0 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses, and only scored 7 goals.

Wolfe, who is from Gilroy, Calif., improved to 16-2-2 against his hometown teams – the Sharks, Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks. He went 9-2-0 against San Jose.

While recently acquired left wing Kiefer Sherwood (upper body) remains sidelined, San Jose does welcome back left wing Philipp Kurashev (upper body, 19 games) and defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin (undisclosed, 10 games).
