Dan Titus discusses how some of the latest NBA headlines will impact the fantasy basketball landscape.
Giannis Antetokounmpo: Bucks slide, future talks heat up – calf injury raises new questions
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s situation escalated before Wednesday’s game when he and his agent, Alex Saratsis, reportedly began discussing his long-term future with the Bucks — conversations that could determine whether the superstar is available ahead of the NBA trade deadline on Feb. 5. Nothing is imminent, and Antetokounmpo isn’t asking, but Milwaukee’s 10-13 start (10th in the Eastern Conference) and rising frustration throughout the organization have heightened the urgency of his evaluation window.

Last night, however, the basketball world was once again in a panic when Antetokounmpo fell to the ground early in the first quarter against the Pistons, injuring his right leg. He was able to leave under his own power but did not return to the game. Fortunately, Antetokounmpo appears to have avoided a serious injury, as Antetokounmpo will miss 2-4 weeks with a calf strain.
Bobby Portis is once again a must-have player, having featured in over 70% of Yahoo’s league games. In deeper leagues, Kyle Kuzma (21% of the roster) is an option while Giannis returns from a calf injury.
Zion Williamson: Three weeks later, trade fever brewing
Zion Williamson’s prospects are even more concerning. He will miss at least three weeks due to an adductor injury, and the rumors about his future in New Orleans are getting louder. Multiple reports indicate the Pelicans may be open to trade conversations, which isn’t surprising since he’s only played 55% of his career games and the team is once again falling toward the bottom of the standings.

It’s frustrating for fantasy managers to have to deal with another multi-week injury and an uncertain atmosphere on the back end. Saddiq Bey (37%) should start anywhere — his scoring and rebounding have been solid — while Derik Queen (44%) is a strong addition thanks to his efficient minute-by-minute production in a larger role. In a shallow league like High Score, Zion becomes a realistic drop-off if your IL position is crowded. For example, I’m frustrated with Trae Young and Pau Banchero already occupying my injury spots on a high-scoring team, and with some good players off waivers, there’s no point in waiting for a return that doesn’t feel close.
Joel Embiid: Trending down on Thursday, back on weekend rough
Joel Embiid remains a constant tightrope walker for fantasy managers. He is listed as doubtful for Thursday’s game and there is currently no indication he will play Friday against the Bucks or Sunday against the Lakers. He has issues with his right knee (which was not surgically repaired in the offseason), but the fact is, playing intermittently feels like his new normal.

The Sixers were fined $100,000 for failing to comply with injury reporting standards, underscoring how unpredictable his availability remains. Managers know the risks on draft day, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify enduring the weekly wave of injuries. If the opportunity presents itself, moving Embiid, like Zion, might save you from a future DNP that could come at the worst possible time.
Ryan Nembhard: You need to add rookie breakout everywhere
Now, the fun part: Nebhard is officially the breakout rookie of the week and perhaps the next must-list guard this season. His first double-double was historic One of them – 28 points, 10 assists, zero turnovers, 12 of 14 shots, a perfect 100% true shooting percentage, which is a statistic that has never been created by an undrafted rookie. That performance set the tone, and he proved it was no fluke with another double-double on Wednesday.

The Mavericks have experimented with Cooper Flagg and D’Angelo Russell at the ball-handling position long enough that it’s clear the offense will flow better with Nembhard at the helm. He’s averaged 34.5 minutes per game over the past two games, a strong indication that his role isn’t going away. Nembhard looks like one of the most important waiver wire players in all formats, and if the rest of the league is slumbering, now is the time to grab him (he’s rostered in 24% of leagues).
