The Atlanta Falcons have a new quarterback on their roster, officially signing Tua Tagovailoa to a one-year contract on Friday afternoon. The former five-prospect pick spent his first six NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins but was released before becoming a free agent.
Tavailoa was a star at the University of Alabama and flourished under former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel after a slow start at Miami. In his fourth season, Tagovailoa passed for 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, making his first Pro Bowl appearance.

The 28-year-old was benched at the end of the 2025 season but hopes a fresh start will help get his career back on track.
“Based on what happened last year, I knew I needed to play better, but I thought this was a good opportunity to come in here and get a good reset,” Tagovailoa said in an interview with AtlantaFalcons.com. “I want to thank the Blank family. I want to thank Arthur (Blanc). I want to thank coach (Kevin) Stefanski. I want to thank the organization for giving me this opportunity. I’m excited.”
Tagovailoa threw for 18,166 yards, 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions in his six-year NFL career, leading the team to a 44-32 overall record.
The Falcons expect Tagovailoa to compete with Michael Penix Jr. for the starting job in Atlanta.

“For Tua, he knows he’s here to compete,” Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham told reporters Friday morning. “It’s like Michael knew he was going to compete.”
