Ex-Washington star says fans have ‘PTSD’ due to past struggles

There doesn’t seem to be anything good about Commander Washington. Whenever Washington has a special season, things fall apart the next season. If you don’t believe it, just look back at the past 25 years. The same is true in 2025. The Wizards currently have a record of 3 wins and 10 losses, have lost 8 games in a row, and are expected to end the season with a 12-game losing streak.

Washington fans are understandably frustrated. With a new owner, coach, general manager and quarterback, the team appears to finally be turning a corner after a magical 2024 season. Instead, an aging and injury-plagued roster ended before the Commander’s season had even really begun. Now, the question returns to a late-season game at Northwestern Stadium where opposing fans outnumbered Washington fans.

Head coach Dan Quinn’s status has been controversial. This would have been unthinkable a year ago, but Washington not only lost this season, they were eliminated. The Commanders have lost five games by 21 points or more. There are some historic numbers in this losing streak. Quinn has replaced defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., who himself took over play calling in Week 11.

For now, Quinn isn’t in trouble. He shouldn’t be like this either. He deserves a better roster, and that all falls on the shoulders of general manager Adam Peters. Last season’s success should earn Quinn another year. We posed a scenario where all bets could be off if the Commanders did lose their last four games and end the season on a 12-game losing streak.

Former Washington cornerback Fred Smoot thought the GM was crazy for firing Quinn.

“What were you thinking?” Smoot responded to 106.7 The Fan’s “BMitch & Finlay” on Monday in response to any fans who might want Quinn fired.

“You know what, we’re used to pain and change. Let me tell you something, our fan base has the worst form of PTSD. Whenever they see anything that resembles the past, they go back to it. If our quarterback gets hurt, they go back to it. To RG3. If we lose three games in a row, they’re going to be back to where I was when Santana (Moss) was playing football. Yeah, they’re going to go back to the worst case scenario at every point: If you fired Dan Quinn, who would you hire to do better than him?”

These are the main points here. We recently talked about the stupid talk about the RG3. This needs to stop. Jayden Daniels is not Robert Griffin III. There is no comparison. But, as Smoot said, Washington fans saw a magical 2012 season followed by an injury to a dynamic second-year quarterback and have been conditioned to believe the same scenario will play out again.

At the same time, fans should be frustrated. Considering the team plans to raise ticket prices in 2026 after a poor season in 2025, the situation isn’t the best. That still doesn’t mean Washington should fire Quinn. Currently, the team has many problems. Lack of talent is one of them. If Peters and his staff go cheap again in free agency, there will be problems. Keep in mind, the Commanders don’t have a second- and fourth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Victory heals everything. The Commanders will face the New York Giants on Sunday. For now, just one win would make a huge difference. This will go down as one of the most pivotal offseasons in franchise history. It feels like what we’ve said before.
