EU threatens measures to stop Meta blocking AI rivals from WhatsApp

<span>STORY: Silicon Valley giants are in hot water with the EU again.</span><span>EU regulators have threatened Meta with temporary restrictions to prevent it from blocking AI rivals from using the WhatsApp messaging service.</span><span>The move comes as they investigate alleged abuse of the US tech giant’s dominant position.</span><span>The European Commission said on Monday (February 9) that it had issued an objection to Meta, saying it might violate EU rules.</span><span>The company further said that interim measures may be taken to prevent what it calls serious and irreparable harm to competitors.</span><span>The move is similar to one taken by Italian regulators in December.</span><span>Mehta said there was no reason for the EU to intervene.</span><span>It believes that there are many options for artificial intelligence and people can use them from various sources such as app stores and websites.</span><span>Meta last month launched a policy to only allow its Meta AI assistant to run on WhatsApp.</span><span>The EU said the decision on whether to implement the measures hinged on Mehta’s right of reply and defence.</span><span>Monday’s move further signals the EU’s goal of enforcing its antitrust rules.</span><span>This comes despite U.S. criticism of its actions against large U.S. technology companies. </span>
