Eight killed in explosion in northern China, state media says

BEIJING, Feb 8 (Reuters) – An explosion at a small biotech company in northern China killed eight people early on Saturday, Chinese state media reported on Sunday.

An explosion occurred in Shuoyang City, Shanxi Province, in the early hours of Saturday morning, state media reported.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the legal representative of Jiapeng Biotech has been detained and the municipal government has established an accident investigation team.

Xinhua News Agency said the company was located in a valley and thick smoke billowed from the accident site.

Reuters was unable to contact the company, which does not maintain the website. According to reports, the cause of the explosion is unknown.

According to its company registration information, Jiapeng Biotechnology was established in June 2025 and engages in the research of animal feed, coal products and building materials.
