Eddie Howe’s team news update: Livramento injury, Hall latest

Liveramento was forced off in the closing stages of the quarter-final at St James’ Park and Howe confirmed the England international, who began his career at Chelsea, will be out for some time until the New Year.

Ahead of Saturday’s visit to Chelsea (kick-off 12:30pm GMT), the Magpies boss also provided an injury update on Lewis Hall, who joins Newcastle permanently from the Blues in the summer of 2024 and will be aiming for a fifth successive home win against the west London side.

Here are some of the key talking points from the manager’s pre-match media briefing at the Newcastle United Media Center on Friday morning…

On Tino Livramento, the right-back withdraws from the Magpies’ Carabao Cup quarter-final against Fulham…

“We don’t think this is a serious injury. The complication we have is that Tino had been injured previously in a very similar area.

“That always makes the potential recovery time a little longer. I don’t think we might see him before 2026.”

On whether Lewis Hall can face his former club…

“He might be [available for tomorrow]. He felt some fatigue in his hamstring after the Sunderland game so he had a scan but it didn’t reveal much so we’ll see. “

On Alex Murphy, Ireland defender making Premier League bow against Chelsea in 2023/24…

“Alex performed very well in important moments for the team. He trained with us for a long time but didn’t play any big games with us.

“He’s had a lot of training time, a lot of development and a good loan spell (at Bolton last season). He’s someone we trust and performances like this will be good for his long-term development.”

Facing Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-finals…

“I think with the quality of the teams left we won’t have an ideal draw. We would prefer to play at home in the second leg like last year. It’s the more important thing, not the opponent.

“That’s the thing, we’re playing in a big game and you play against top teams. We had to do it last year and had to beat everyone to win trophies and we’re going to have to do it again.”

Saturday’s opponents…

“I think they are improving and continuing to get better. Chelsea have changed a lot in recent seasons. Their recruitment has become very young and I think in the long term you will definitely see the benefits of that.

“A really good coach, style of play and team. It’s a big challenge this week with a short recovery time for us, but we’re looking forward to it. We love early kick-offs, so anything we can do to help the team move in our direction is important.”

About Lewis Miley…

“Luis performed very well on Wednesday. Very happy with him. Great goal, great composure and great performance. The tactics are different in every game and the challenges presented by each team are different, so I have to try and pick the right team.”
