A fire destroyed Daisy Scott School in Wolfe County Thursday night, school district officials said in a social media post Friday.
The Wolfe County Board of Education said no one was inside the building and district officials were unaware of any injuries.
“We are sad to report that a fire occurred at Daisy Scott School and Gym last night,” school district officials posted on Facebook.
“The fire was devastating and resulted in a total loss of the building,” the post said. “We are thankful that no one was in the building when it happened and to our knowledge no one was injured.”
Students living at Daisy Scott Residential Treatment Facility are among those.
District officials said firefighters “controlled the fire amid extremely adverse icing and temperature conditions.”
School officials said school staff will begin meeting with partners at the Daisy Scott Campus on Friday to develop a plan to “get our school back on its feet.”
“As everyone in this community knows, the Daisy Scott Children’s Home is a staple institution in our county that has been serving children in need across Kentucky and the United States for decades,” the post read.
School officials could not immediately be reached Friday morning.
‘The children and their homes are safe’
Residential Facilities Officer Patty Wilder told the Herald-Leader Friday morning that the school building, attended by only 24 children, was destroyed in the fire.
“The children and their home are safe,” said Wilder, chief operating officer of Buckhorn Children and Family Services.
School and facilities officials said the community was outpouring of compassion.
“This unfortunate event has profoundly impacted our school community. We ask for continued thoughts and prayers as we support our students through this loss and help them adjust to their new daily lives,” Wilder said.
