Eagles DC Vic Fangio considering retirement, hasn’t made final decision yet

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has talked about retiring after the 2025 NFL season, but Fangio has not yet made a final decision on whether he will serve as coach in 2026, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Fangio, 67, also reportedly considered retirement last offseason, but eventually returned. The coach is reportedly committed to the team through 2026, but there’s a chance he could change his mind.

According to the Philadelphia Voice, while the team hopes to return Fangio, they are concerned about his retirement and have contacted former Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon. However, Gannon agreed to join the Green Bay Packers as the team’s defensive coordinator and would no longer play if Fangio retired.

The Eagles are also considering reaching out to former Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, according to the Philadelphia Voice. Schwartz failed to become the Browns’ head coach, and the team hired Todd Monken instead. Schwartz reportedly wants out of Cleveland following this decision.

To complicate matters further, the Eagles lost defensive passing coordinator Christian Parker to the Dallas Cowboys. Parker, who was considered a possible replacement for Fangio, is now off the radar after agreeing to be the Cowboys’ next defensive coordinator, according to the Inquirer. Eagles defensive line coach Clint Hurt does have experience serving as defensive coordinator if Fangio leaves.

Fangio has a long history of success in the NFL and remains one of the most feared defensive coordinators. The Eagles’ defense ranks fifth in points allowed in 2025 thanks to Fangio’s scheme. In Fangio’s first season with the team, the Eagles ranked second in that statistic.

Fangio has been an NFL coordinator since 1995, when he was first promoted to defensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers. He has held this position with multiple teams during his NFL career, including the Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins.

After years of success at the position, Fangio finally landed his first head coaching job with the Denver Broncos in 2019. He played for the team for three seasons and achieved a record of 19 wins and 30 losses. After being fired, Fangio spent one year with the Dolphins before joining the Eagles. He led Philadelphia’s defense to a Super Bowl title in his first season with the team.
