Ducks PG Jackson Shelstad could miss rest of season with hand injury

The Oregon Ducks men’s basketball team took on the fourth-ranked Michigan Wolverines, but lost 81-71, and head coach Dana Altman released some disappointing news about star point guard Jackson Shelstad.

The West Linn native suffered a hand injury before the season started, causing him to miss the first game of the season. He returned for the second game and played in 12 games before suffering another hand injury on December 28 against Omaha.

The new injury caused Shelstad to miss the team’s final five games, all Big Ten play, and the Ducks went 1-4 during that span. They currently sit at 8-10 overall on the season and 1-6 in the Big Ten, and they’re unlikely to return the 2025 Big Ten third-team point guard anytime soon.

After the loss to Michigan, Altman revealed that Kjellstad suffered tendon and ligament injuries in his hand against Omaha. Surgery is on the table, which would end the season. If surgery isn’t the best option, the return-to-play timeframe would be 6-8 weeks, meaning he could return at the end of conference play and the Big Ten tournament, which begins on March 12.

In his place, Weilin has played more minutes and scored in double figures over the past four games, the first time he has done so since transferring to Oregon State after playing in the Chinese Basketball Association.

Still, the Ducks lost four games.

Nate Butte, a third-team All-Big Ten selection in 2025, is also out with a foot injury that could keep him out for an extended period of time.

Already two games under .500 and losing four straight, the Ducks’ future looks bleak due to injuries to Shelstad and Bute.
