New Delhi: South Africa’s 76-run defeat to India in the first match of the T20 World Cup Super 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday gave the hosts a reality check and exposed serious flaws in their batting. Chasing 188, India fell to 111 in 18.5 overs on a tricky pitch with the Proteas bowlers dominating throughout the match.
Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj and Corbin Bosh collectively bowled well while Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant performance earlier in the game came to naught. For South Africa, David Miller, Dewald Brewis and Tristan Stubbs played key roles in taking the total to 187/7 after some early inconsistency.
After the match, South Africa captain Aiden Markram praised his team for understanding the situation well and executing their plan.
“Excellent performance. Very different to the type of wickets we have here and it was great to see the boys assessing early and adapting their skills to execute their plan,” he said in his post-match speech.
Markram emphasized the importance of Miller and Brevis working together, adding: “I think first and foremost is the partnership. (Miller and Brevis) they’re great, they prepare us, stabilize things and keep us in the game.”
He explained how the team adjusts its strategy in the second half of the inning, noting, “So it’s about finding space where we can run hard, put our ego aside and attack as much as we can in the backfield.”
Markram also praised his bowling team, saying their performance had improved tremendously after a slow start to the game.
“We will make mistakes and as a team we don’t mind that so we will keep those aside. We feel Lungi is a threat whenever he bowls and he can take wickets for us in the middle overs. It depends on the conditions,” he added.
Looking ahead, he warned against complacency, describing West Indies as “a dangerous T20 team” and stressing the need to stay sharp in the upcoming clash.
Meanwhile, India’s batting performance has been disastrous. The early wickets put them at a disadvantage, none of the top-order batsmen were able to play a meaningful innings on a tight surface and the timing was difficult.
Even Suryakumar Yadav struggled to find fluency while the middle order could not recover from an early collapse. Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube tried to rebuild but South Africa’s strict bowling plan prevented any late counterattack.
