Driver in fatal Anthony Joshua crash charged with 4 counts, including driving without valid license

The driver of a car involved in a fatal crash that injured Anthony Joshua and killed two of his close friends was named and charged on Friday.

On Monday, December 29, a Lexus SUV driven by Kayode Adeniyi collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, Nigeria. The accident resulted in the deaths of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, members of the former unified heavyweight champion’s training team.

Joshua, 36, was initially hospitalized following the accident and was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after being deemed clinically fit to recover at home. Joshua reportedly did not suffer any major injuries in the incident.

Adeniyi was charged at the Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday with four counts: dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention – causing personal injury and property damage, and driving without a valid national driving licence.

Adeniyi denied all charges and was released on bail of 5,000,000 naira ($3,480) and remanded in custody until bail conditions are met. The case was adjourned to January 20.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the SUV driven by Joshua was “speeding”, causing the front passenger-side tire to burst, and then lost control of the vehicle while overtaking and hit a stationary truck.

Joshua, who defeated Jake Paul in the sixth round of a Netflix heavyweight bout in Miami on December 19, was on vacation in his native Nigeria when the accident occurred.

The British boxer was due to return to training camp in January for a fight in Saudi Arabia on February 14, but now the fight cannot take place.
