Downhill champ Breezy Johnson adds engagement bling to Olympic gold

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Olympic downhill champion Breezy Johnson failed to add to her medal tally in the women’s super-G on Thursday.

Regardless, the American star left Trofaan something precious: an engagement ring.

Johnson’s long-term boyfriend Connor Watkins proposed to her near the finish line. Surrounded by members of the U.S. Ski Team, Johnson said, “Yes!” and the two embraced.

Johnson, 30, then held out her left hand to show off her new jewelry – a blue sapphire surrounded by white sapphires set in white gold.

The happy offer came about an hour after Johnson’s bid for a podium finish in super-G ended with a crash. Her right stick hit a gate high on the course, causing her to fall into the fence. Johnson stood up uninjured.
