DoorDash exits 4 markets, including Japan, to focus on growth elsewhere

DoorDash said Wednesday it would end operations in Qatar, Singapore, Japan and Uzbekistan.

The San Francisco-based delivery company said the decision came after months of review of country-specific situations. DoorDash said it wants to focus investments in areas where it can build sustainable scale and long-term market leadership.

“Our first priority is to support our teams and partners in achieving an orderly transition as we focus on regions where we can deliver the best product and achieve long-term success,” Miki Kuusi, head of DoorDash’s international division, said in a statement.

DoorDash is a latecomer to some of the affected markets. The company started operating in Japan in 2021, five years after rival Uber Eats. Deliveroo, a British delivery company acquired by DoorDash last year, has only been operating in Qatar since 2022. It’s been nearly a decade since Dubai-based Talabat started delivering in Qatar.

DoorDash also faces stiff competition from established rivals such as Singapore’s GrabFood and Foodpanda and Uzbekistan’s Russia’s Yandex Eats.

DoorDash said it does not expect the actions to impact its financial guidance. The company’s shares were up 5% at midday.

DoorDash is the dominant delivery provider in the United States, but it has been playing catch-up to Uber Eats internationally. In addition to acquiring Deliveroo, DoorDash also acquired Finnish delivery service Wolt in 2021 to help expand into Europe.
