CNN shares poll following Donald Trump’s State of the Union address
On Tuesday, February 24, the two-term US president delivered the second State of the Union address of his political career ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
A CNN poll conducted by SSRS during the event showed that about two-thirds of the audience gave Donald Trump’s speech some favorable rating, with 38% giving it an extremely positive rating. The response was actually better than the score he got when he spoke to Congress last year, but pales in comparison to the ratings of his first-term speech.
Before Trump’s speech, an estimated 54% of speech watchers agreed that his policies would benefit the country. After he spoke, a CNN poll showed that number had risen to 64%. Likewise, 44% thought the businessman-turned-politician was focusing on the right issues before the speech, a figure that jumped to 54% after the speech.
However, a whopping 45% of the Republican-dominated audience admitted after listening to Trump’s speech that he paid too little attention to the cost of living. Additionally, 40% said they don’t trust the president to make things more affordable.
Additionally, according to polls, audiences have mixed feelings about Donald Trump’s tariff actions. His economic and immigration policies are getting a better response, with 62% saying his strategies are in the best interest of the country.
Meanwhile, 45% expressed full trust in Trump’s leadership, with 43% supporting the 79-year-old politician’s responsible use of U.S. military power. As for his stance on Iran, 38% said he would be able to handle the situation appropriately.
Despite the generally positive response to polls, Donald Trump’s State of the Union address should not sway public opinion in his favor because speech watchers are mostly people who already resonate with his ideology.
Notably, another CNN poll conducted days before Trump’s speech showed his approval rating at just 36 percent.
