DeWitt Township Police issues warning following security program scam

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The DeWitt Township Police Department is warning community members about a recent computer security program scam in which an elderly resident was defrauded of thousands of dollars.

According to a Facebook post DeWitt Chater TownshipThe woman, a DeWitt resident, reported she was defrauded out of $9,500 after receiving an email claiming to be her daughter.

When the victim opened the email, her computer froze and a security alert popped up asking her to call an 800 number.

The victim said she called the number and spoke with someone who told her she needed to purchase a new security program on her computer.

When the victim told the scammers that she had purchased a security program, the scammers said they would return the money to her so she could purchase a new program.

The victim then shared her personal banking information with the scammers, allowing them to create a false bank statement showing they were returning too much money to the residents.

The victim was then asked to go to her bank and wire the excess money to an account in Florida. She did so, but the funds were defrauded.
