Detroit Lions to bring back cornerback Rock Ya-Sin: reports

The Detroit Lions brought in one of the most productive free agent signings of the 2025 season.

Cornerback Rock Ya-Sin will rejoin the Lions on a one-year contract worth $4 million, according to NFL Network. Ya-Sin’s agency confirmed the signing on social media.

Yassin, 29, signed a one-year contract with the Lions last offseason and became a key part of the secondary, appearing in all 17 games and starting six in place of injured cornerbacks Terion Arnold and DJ Reed. Reid missed six games with a hamstring injury, while Arnold was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 1 with a shoulder injury.

Lions’ Rock Ya-Sin blocks a reception from Steelers receiver DK Metcalf during the first half at Ford Field on Dec. 21, 2025.

He had a career-high nine pass deflections and 47 tackles. Yassin’s opponent passer rating when targeted was 76.6, also a career high. The move brings some much-needed depth to a team looking to bounce back after a difficult 2025 season.

Where does Rock Ya-Sin fit into the 2026 lineup?

In an ideal world, Yassin will enter next season in the same role as this year: as a high-level backup. Reed, a veteran cornerback who signed a three-year, $48 million contract last offseason, is hoping for a bounce-back season after a serious hamstring injury derailed 2025. Arnold’s status with the team is somewhat uncertain as his name appears on judicial orders related to armed robbery and kidnapping.

While there currently appears to be no room for him in the starting lineup, that will surely change. After Amik Robertson agreed to terms with the Washington Commanders on Monday, there’s little chance he’ll compete for the starting five cornerback spot with Ennis Rakestraw, who has yet to show the ability to stay healthy. But Yassin has rarely played the position in his seven-year career, so it’s not exactly what we were expecting.

Do the Lions still need to add cornerback?

In addition to the players mentioned above, Detroit has Khalil Dorsey and Nick Whiteside, two players you wouldn’t believe would start the entire season, but two players who can hold their own in a pinch. Signing Yassin leaves the Lions down to six cornerbacks and no clear starter, plus the uncertainty of Arnold.

Theoretically, the Lions could entrust Yassin to replace Arnold long-term if necessary, but that would immediately erase their high-level depth. As a result, we expect the Lions to continue looking for another cornerback or two in free agency, whether to compete with Rex Straw at nickel corner or simply add to their depth on the outside — or both.
