Derrick Henry: New York Giants’ John Harbaugh ‘a great leader’

There is no tougher runner in the NFL right now than Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry.

The future Hall of Famer currently leads the NFL in touchdowns (127) and rushing yards (13,018) among active players, and his highlight reels are filled with defenders bouncing off his invincible body.

Henry started his career at Tennessee, moved to Baltimore two years ago to improve his chances of playing in the Super Bowl, and played two seasons under head coach John Harbaugh, who was fired by the Ravens last week after 18 seasons.

“I love Coach. He’s a great leader,” Henry told The Escapist in a recent interview. “I had a great time with him in Baltimore. It’s a little sad that it ended when I got to Baltimore, but I wish coach the best. I’m very grateful for everything he taught us and taught me my last two years as a freshman.”

Harbaugh naturally made the move to the New York Giants to become their new head coach.

Henry, the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner and five-time Pro Bowler, was asked about how Harbaugh treats his players. His answer should please the Giants and their fans.

“He had a great philosophy on how to run a team and how to treat players,” Henry said. “After we won, he would point out every player that had an impact on the game. Even if it wasn’t noticed nationally, he would make sure that the hard work they put in for the team was appreciated by the entire organization.”

But more importantly, Harbaugh will bring structure and discipline to the Giants. After 10 double-digit losing seasons in the past 12 years, the Giants and their fans have finally found a coach they deserve.

“As we begin this new chapter in New York, our focus is simple,” Harbaugh said during his introductory press conference with the Giants this week, “and that starts with building a physical, tough team that can overpower opponents from start to finish, especially at the end, that knows how to finish, be smart and disciplined, play the game the way it should be played, and make everyone who watches the game, including those who play the game, proud.

“We’re going to work together. We have good, talented people with a shared mission. We’re going to be relentlessly committed to this organization, this city and our fans and doing things the right way every day. Nothing will be taken for granted. It’s going to always, always be about the team. Team, team, team. Thank you Dad. That’s how it will be. Now it’s time to get to work.”
