Italy international defender Lucia Di Guglielmo has signed a three-year contract with the Washington Spirit, the team announced Wednesday. Spirit paid a transfer fee to Di Guglielmo’s previous club Roma.
“Joining the Washington Spirit family is a great opportunity and a tremendous responsibility,” DiGuglielmo said. “I’m coming into this with determination, discipline and a strong desire to win. I’m excited to see where this new challenge will take me and push me beyond my limits.”

Di Guglielmo won the Serie A championship with Roma in 2023 and 2024.
Di Guglielmo, 28, is the third Italian player to join the NWSL, following Sofia Cantore and Lisa Botin. Cantor also plays for the Washington Spirit, while Bottin plays for the Houston Dash.
“Lucia is a great addition to an already strong defensive line as we prepare for the 2026 season,” said general manager Nathan Minion. “Her extensive experience playing at a high level in Europe will help her transition to our club seamlessly, and we are excited to welcome her to Washington.”
Di Guglielmo has represented Italy at the European Championships and Women’s World Cup, including Euro 2025 where Italy advanced to the semi-finals.
