Typically, when a high school sports team is sanctioned or punished, it comes directly from the state association. In the case of Cal baseball powerhouse De La Salle, it comes straight from the school administrators themselves.
The Mercury News reports that the Spartan baseball team has been forced to cancel the first five games of the 2026 season due to violations of De La Salle School policies, team rules and code of conduct. The Spartans are ranked No. 10 in the latest Rivals High School Baseball Top 25 rankings.

The school provided the Mercury News with a statement regarding their decision to suspend Spartans baseball for the first five games:
The team will participate in reflective and restorative activities designed to reinforce school expectations and strengthen leadership within the program. The purpose of this action is not just disciplinary action, but to ensure that the student grows in character and responsibility as a representative of De La Salle High School. De La Salle High School holds its students and student-athletes to the highest standards of conduct. Participating in athletics is a privilege that comes with a great responsibility to teammates, coaches, opponents, and the broader school community. When these standards are not met, appropriate and meaningful consequences are required. While this situation is disappointing, it provides an important opportunity for accountability, reflection, and growth. The school is committed to working with student-athletes and coaching staff to ensure they have a clear understanding of future expectations and to strengthen a culture rooted in our core values of faith, integrity and academics.
De La Salle is arguably the top program in Northern California, as the Spartans have won eight NCS Division I championships and 15 overall.
De La Salle’s first five games that will be affected by cancellations include a home game against St. Ignatius, Saturday’s road game at St. Mary’s Stockton, two tournament games in San Diego on March 5-6 and a March 13 game against Jesuit Carmichael. The report states that this would be the only way the game could turn into a loss if the games cannot be made up during the season.
