Texas A&M’s tight end room will look a lot different next fall heading into spring practice, which begins Friday, March 20, as UTSA transfer TE Houston Thomas will make his first official appearance since arriving in College Station in early January. On paper, the Aggies lost three tight ends to the NFL Draft and transfer portal, including Theo Melin-Ohrstrom, who transferred to SMU in the offseason.
Thomas, a College Station native, graduated high school with Michael Elko, the son of Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko, and the elder Elko went on to have an impressive career with the Roadrunners, compiling 68 catches for 818 yards and five touchdowns over the past two seasons. Add in junior tight end Curley Armstrong and senior Micah Riley, and the Aggies don’t lack depth at one of their most important positions.

Still, who will be Texas A&M’s next receiving tight end will likely come down to Armstrong and Thomas this spring, heading into the fall, where they get a chance to showcase their unique skill sets at the annual Maroon & White Spring Game on April 18.
This week, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football writer Mike Craven ranked his top tight ends in Texas ahead of the 2026 season, with Houston Thomas ranking second behind returning Texas Tech star Terrance Carter, who had 624 yards and five touchdowns:
Thomas was named to the American Athletic Conference Third Team in 2025 after sharing the tight end space with another talented player, Patrick Overmyer (now with Houston). The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Thomas, a College Station native, should be a safety blanket for quarterback Marcel Reed. He is a good pass catcher and aggressive blocker. Thomas impressed Texas A&M coaches in last year’s Week 1 meeting when he caught two balls for 22 yards. Over the past two seasons, he has caught 68 passes for 818 yards and five touchdowns.
After acquiring former Alabama wide receiver Isaiah Horton from the transfer portal, redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed will have an array of weapons at his disposal, led by junior wide receiver Mario Claver, who finished his first season at CSTAT with 917 yards and four receiving touchdowns, averaging 15.5 yards per catch. At 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, Houston Thomas is a well-rounded tight end who brings immediate value to Texas A&M’s lineup.
