CD Projekt confirmed on Wednesday that the sequel to “Cyberpunk 2077” has entered pre-production. The company also said that the game has retained the “Project Orion” codename and will now be called “Cyberpunk 2.” However, it’s unclear if this will be the sequel’s official title when it’s released. The sequel to “Cyberpunk 2077” was announced in 2022 and will be developed by CD Projekt Red’s North American studio in Boston.
Cyberpunk 2 is now in pre-production
The Polish company provided a development update in its Q1 2025 earnings report, confirming that the sequel has moved beyond the concept stage.
CD Projekt said in its financial report: “A few weeks ago, the CD PROJEKT RED team responsible for the next big game in the Cyberpunk universe completed the concept phase of the project. As a result, Cyberpunk 2 (previously codenamed Project Orion) has entered the pre-production stage.”
The game was announced as Project Orion in 2022, but will now be renamed Cyberpunk 2. However, this is not the official title of the sequel. CD Projekt Red senior PR manager Ola Sondej confirmed to The Verge that the new name simply means “it’s another game in the cyberpunk universe.”
In an earnings presentation slide, the studio also confirmed that the number of employees on the Cyberpunk 2 development team had increased from 84 in February to 96 at the end of April. The company is currently working on multiple projects, with the majority of its 730 employees assigned to The Witcher 4. The next Witcher game is already in full production in November 2024, with 422 developers currently working on the game. “The Witcher” multiplayer spin-off “Project Sirius” currently has a development team of 48 people, and another 19 employees are developing a new IP called “Project Hadar”.
Cyberpunk 2 doesn’t have a release date, but it could be years away. CD Projekt has been tight-lipped about the game, but some unconfirmed details about the sequel have emerged.
This month, Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith revealed that the sequel will feature a second city in addition to Night City from the first game. Pondsmith, whose Cyberpunk tabletop role-playing game inspired the setting, characters and story of Cyberpunk 2077, describes the new city as “Chicago gone wrong.”
