Critics have accused Donald Trump of a clear lack of empathy in his comments about the mass shooting at Brown University that left two people dead.
During his speech at the White House Christmas reception, Trump began by talking about Brown University as a “great school, indeed one of the greatest schools in the world.”
But then the president said:
“Things can happen so the nine injured recover as quickly as possible. To the families of the two who are no longer with us, I send my deepest regards and respect to the United States of America. Thank you very much. This is a very important thing. We mean it.”
While Trump did offer his “deepest regards,” the suggestion that “something could happen” still sparked outrage on social media:

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s press office led the latest swipe at Trump, writing simply on behalf of the potential 2028 Democratic presidential nominee: “Nothing to say.”
