Cowboys K Brandon Aubrey denies he’s seeking nearly $10 million per year in free agency: ‘Fake’

Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey wants you not to believe everything you read about his NFL free agency.

The three-time Pro Bowler on Tuesday denied recent claims that he’s asking for an unprecedented amount of money as a restricted free agent. The day before, reports abounded that his camp had rejected a record offer from the Cowboys worth $7.5 million per year and instead sought something closer to $10 million.

The denial came via an Instagram comment from Cowboys-owned 105.3 The Fan, in which the host was discussing a report by The Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins and largely doubting whether Aubrey was worth such a market-resetting trade.

One comment on Aubrey’s account read: “Fake.”

Aubrey’s wife, Jenn, responded similarly in another IG post: “Fake.”

The denials are the latest development in the Cowboys’ efforts to retain one of the NFL’s top kickers. It’s clear that Aubrey will surpass the current kicking salary record of $6.4 million held by Harrison Butker of the Kansas City Chiefs. The question is how much.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said earlier this week that negotiations have been “a journey” since they began before the start of the 2025 season:

“We’ve been in talks with Aubrey since before the season started. It’s been a journey. We’re not at the point where everyone agrees yet, so it’s not done yet, but we’d love to have him done.”

As a restricted free agent, Aubrey’s fate ultimately lies in the hands of the Cowboys. ESPN reports that the team could place a second-round tender on Aubrey, which would give them first dibs on any contract he signs with another team and also give them a valuable second-round pick if they decide to let him go.

It’s one of several touching parts of the Cowboys’ offseason, the other big one being that they may franchise tag wide receiver George Pickens.

The 30-year-old Aubrey is the NFL’s all-time leader in field goal attempts of at least 60 yards, and he’s connected on 88.2 percent of his field goal attempts over his three-year career, one of the highest percentages in league history, although he has led the NFL in 50-yard field goal attempts each of the past two seasons. His story from unknown pro football player to star kicker is a great story, but we’ll have to see if it continues in Dallas.
