Cowboys 2026 NFL free agency: Tracking every rumor and report

Free agency season has arrived. The NFL never sleeps and will dominate the sports world this week as players move through free agency. Some will return to their teams, others will find new homes, and there could be plenty of chaos in between.

While free agency will officially begin on March 11 at 4 p.m. ET, teams can begin negotiating with players on March 9 at 12 p.m. ET. News can and will come throughout the week and beyond.

Dallas Cowboys free agent signings

  • The Cowboys traded a 2027 Day 3 pick to the Packers for defensive lineman Rashan Gary. According to reports, a 2027 fourth-round pick, specifically.

  • The Cowboys reached an agreement with safety Jalen Thompson on Monday. According to reports, this is a three-year contract worth up to $36 million.

  • It was reported late Monday night that pass rusher Sam Williams will return to the Cowboys. This is reportedly a one-year, $3 million deal.

  • The Cowboys signed safety P.J. Locke on Tuesday afternoon. This is reportedly a one-year, $5 million deal.

  • Dallas signed former Chargers tackle Otito Ogbonya to a one-year, $3 million contract.

  • The Cowboys signed quarterback Sam Howell to a one-year contract.

  • Cowboys restructure Terrence Steele trade. As a result, there is now $22 million in fully guaranteed funding. That creates about $13 million in salary cap space per report.

  • There are rumors online that the Cowboys are going to sign Trae Hendrickson.

  • Jane Slater mentions Jaylen Thompson and Dean of the Department of Science and Technology of China as a name to watch the Cowboys. (UPDATE: Thompson has reached an agreement with…Nakobe Dean to join the Raiders)

  • Todd Archer noted that the Cowboys have been in contact with Jalen Thompson.

  • Former Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson seems to predict Trae Hendrickson will join the Cowboys, but it’s hard to know how serious that is.

  • Todd Archer reports that both Dallas and Nakobi Dean were offered the opportunity to join Quai Walker, but they both ended up with the Raiders.

  • Jane Slater mentioned Fred Warner and Patrick Quinn in conversation on social media, but it’s worth noting that they are under contract with their respective teams and must be traded.

  • Jane Slater noted on Tuesday morning that Patrick Queen’s situation may have hit a “roadblock.”

  • Jane Slater mentioned a number of things at lunchtime on Tuesday:

    • Tariq Woolen is a name to watch

    • Nakobe Dean’s situation is one where he chooses to be comfortable/familiar

    • They won’t get to where they need to be like trading Patrick Quinn

    • Trey Hendrickson still technically possible

  • The Cowboys restructured Kenny Clark’s contract and created nearly $9 million in salary cap space.

  • Dallas may consider trading Osa Odijizwa, CBS’s Jonathan Jones reports.

  • It was initially reported that Dallas would return to the Maxx Crosby sweepstakes, but later reports said they would not. We’ll see there.

    • Todd Archer reported Monday afternoon that Butler actually signed a “separate” agreement for the same amount as the ERFA. The difference, he noted, is that there is injury carve-out in his contract and there won’t be one if he is tendered, so the Cowboys now have some injury protection.
