Costco issues urgent recall on nuts

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) releases new food recall information at least once a week. The recall is related to allergens, possible bacterial or lead contamination, and the possible presence of glass, wood, plastic or other foreign matter in the food that should not be present.

So far, according to the FDA website, major food recalls last year include:

  • Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon (Kraft Heinz)

  • Good & Gather Southwestern Style Burrito Bowl Mix

  • Hormel Foods – Tintymore Beef Stew

  • Middlefield Original Cheese Co-op and Sunrise Creamery Cheese

  • Sprout Organics Sweet Potatoes, Apples and Spinach

  • Trader Joe’s Vampire Killer Cheese Curds

  • my heart baby formula

The list goes on.

Now, Costco members in Hawaii are being urged to check their pantries for a popular baking ingredient after American Nuts LLC voluntarily recalled the nuts due to potential salmonella contamination.

On Dec. 5, Costco sent a letter to members warning customers not to eat the affected macadamia nuts and to return the product for a full refund.

Costco said the recall was initiated in partnership with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to the recall notice, affected products may be contaminated with Salmonella:

  • Macadamia Nut Company Roasted Nuts

  • 20 oz package

  • Item #1840464

  • Batch number: 307HMNC25L3

  • sold in Costco Hawaii Kai Warehouse

  • Purchase date: November 29 to December 4, 2025

Costco members who purchase nuts during the last week of November and the first week of December are advised to check the lot number printed on the back of the package. If the codes match then nuts should not eat in any case.

Customers can return products to Costco Full refundeven if the package has been opened.

Salmonella is a common cause of foodborne illness in the United States. Symptoms often include:

  • diarrhea

  • fever

  • abdominal cramps

  • nausea or vomiting

  • Headache

If sick, most healthy adults recover within a week without treatment, but this bacteria can pose serious risks to children under 5, adults over 65, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

“Salmonellosis is the second leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that salmonellosis causes more than 1.35 million illnesses, 26,500 hospitalizations, and nearly 420 deaths each year,” Kim Cook, Ph.D., national program director for the USDA Agricultural Research Service’s Nutrition, Food Safety/Quality Program, told USDA.

The company’s recall response process, which includes refunds and direct outreach, is considered one of the more proactive in the retail industry.
