During a congressional hearing on Tuesday, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) read aloud text messages from an immigration agent who bragged about shooting a Chicago woman last year.
On October 4, Customs and Border Protection agents Charles Exum shooting Marimar Martinez He was at Brighton Park five times during Operation Midway Blitz, the Department of Homeland Security’s immigration crackdown. Homeland Security claims Martinez struck Exum and other agents, prompting them to “fire defensively.” The Justice Department prosecuted Martinez, but the charges were ultimately dismissed after the government admitted in court that the impact did not occur.
House Democrats held a hearing on Tuesday on the Trump administration’s ongoing crackdown in places like Chicago and Minnesota. Martinez gave a harrowing account of the incident.
“After less than three hours in the hospital, I was released and taken into FBI custody. When we left the hospital, I was escorted out from behind in a wheelchair. I saw dozens of Border Patrol agents waiting outside the hospital,” Martinez said. “One of the agents came up to me with his cell phone and took a picture of me. This was the agent who was constantly coming in and out.” [of my hospital] In the room, I had to repeatedly ask him to leave. “
Later in the hearing, Garcia read text messages from Exum about the shooting. These messages were displayed on a placard behind him:
Ms. Martinez, these are images of text messages sent by the agent who shot you. These are actually disturbing to read, but I think it’s important for the public to see this. The agent linked to an article about your shooting and texted, “Read this. 5 rounds, 7 holes. I fired 7 rounds and she put 7 holes. Put that in your book, kids… Oh well, that’s it. Bad things happen.”
This is someone who works for the US government.
The hearing also heard from Luke Granger and Brent Grangerbrothers Renee Goodeshot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis last month. Two weeks after she was killed, Border Patrol agents Jesus Ochoa and customs and border protection officers Raimundo Gutierrez shot Alex Pretty in the city.
