Coin toss curse puts India in a million-to-one heads or tailspin

The Indian team lost 20 consecutive coins in a one-day international match with unbelievable results – odds of over a million to one.

Stand-in captain KL Rahul admitted that he was baffled by the run of bad luck, which dates back to the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad when Rohit Sharma was in charge.

“I have been practicing but it’s obviously not working,” Rahul said after losing another somersault in the second one-day international at Raipur on Wednesday.

The odds of losing 20 consecutive coin toss are 1,048,576 to 1 and Rahul will hope to end this statistical anomaly in the third and final South Africa ODI in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.

“Honestly, this is the biggest pressure I’ve ever been under because we haven’t won a toss in a long time,” Rahul said after seeing his opponent Temba Bavuma correctly call again.

Since the last correct call in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in Mumbai on November 15, 2023, three Indian captains – Rohit, regular ODI captain Shubman Gill and Rahul – have attempted the toss but failed.

“Rahul says he has been practicing, but how do you know what the opposing captain is going to shout?” great batsman Sunil Gavaskar told broadcaster JioStar.

“Because you know, the first game, the captain was Aiden Markram.

“So Markram might be a ‘heads’ guy and Temba Bavuma might be a ‘tails’ captain.”

Former South Africa bowler Dale Steyn said Faf du Plessis asked Bavuma to bowl for him after a long spell of failure.

“This is the first time I’ve seen a captain ask other players to come over and throw the ball,” Steyn said.
