Coach Bill Self doesn’t travel with No. 19 Kansas after going to the hospital, school says

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self did not accompany the Jayhawks for Tuesday night’s game in Boulder, Colo., after being taken to a hospital in Lawrence on Monday, the school said.

The Kansas State athletic department said in a statement that Self felt ill and went to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. The school said that he felt much better after receiving intravenous fluids.

It’s unclear whether Self will try to travel to the game or if an assistant will be available to serve as a backup for the 19th-ranked Jayhawks.

Self, 63, who missed the 2023 Big 12 and NCAA tournaments due to a heart condition, underwent a standard catheterization procedure and had two stents inserted to help treat clogged arteries. In July, he had two more stents implanted.

Now in his 23rd season, Self led Kansas to national championships in 2008 and 2022 and became the program’s career wins leader with a 609-156 record. The former Oklahoma State player was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017 and also coached at Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Illinois.
