CLT airport parking garage operator loses contract, will lay off nearly 200 workers

A national parking services and management company is laying off more than 180 employees after it ceases operations at the Charlotte Airport.

As of June 30, AmeriPark and Republic Parking will no longer manage parking operations at Charlotte Douglas Airport.

According to a North Carolina Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) report received by the North Carolina Department of Commerce on March 20, 188 employees will be laid off as AmeriPark loses the airport contract. The report was released on Monday, March 23. Federal law requires such notices during mass layoffs.

In 2014, AmeriPark was selected to provide on-street valet parking at Charlotte Douglas Airport. AmeriPark currently operates the Express Deck Preferred Parking garage at 5625 Wilkinson Blvd.

Airport officials said the facility issued a request for proposals last year seeking a contractor for airport parking and valet services.

ACE Parking was selected as the contractor, and the Charlotte City Council approved a $6.65 million annual contract last month. ACE will take over operations on July 1.

AmeriPark did not respond to a request for comment Monday.

AmeriPark noted that some of the affected employees may be hired by the new management company if they qualify as operators, the report said. If this is not done, the worker will be fired. This site is a non-union location and has no collision rights.

Airport officials echoed that sentiment, saying ACE will handle all hiring decisions.

AmeriPark and Republic Parking, the national parking services and management company that operates Express Deck at Charlotte Airport, will lay off 188 employees through June.
