Paul revealed on social media that he was sent home by the team late Tuesday night midway through their five-game road trip. The Clippers are in Atlanta ahead of Wednesday night’s game against the Hawks.

While specific details are unclear, NBA insider Chris Haynes called it a “bizarre severance move.”

Paul, 40, announced this fall that he would retire at the end of the season. Marking his 21st year in the league, the future Hall of Famer just signed a one-year, $3.6 million contract with the Clippers after spending six seasons with the team early in his career. He said at the time that joining the Clippers again was “a no-brainer.”

But the Clippers are off to a terrible start to the season. They entered Wednesday’s game with just a 5-16 record and a five-game losing streak.
