The New England Patriots fell short in Super Bowl X and have some work to do this offseason. Arguably one of the most important things on the team’s to-do list is giving superstar cornerback Christian Gonzalez a new contract.
After being named to the All-Pro Second Team in 2024, Gonzalez was subsequently selected to his first Pro Bowl. In 14 games, Gonzalez racked up 69 tackles and 10 pass deflections, further cementing himself as one of the top defensive corners in the game.

Gonzalez was outstanding in the postseason, recording 19 tackles, one interception, seven pass deflections and one sack in four games. Due to his performance, the popular Madden video game series made Gonzalez the highest-rated cornerback since the Super Bowl.
This is just another testament to Gonzalez’s skills, as he is now considered a top cornerback in the league. For the Patriots, this is just another example of why they need to give him a new contract sooner rather than later.
Assuming New England exercises the fifth-year option on Gonzalez’s rookie contract, they would have two years to find a way to work out a new deal with him. However, after seeing his performance in the playoffs, the front office may be inspired to get something done this offseason.

Ensuring Gonzalez is with the Patriots for the foreseeable future is one of the team’s biggest goals this offseason. That could cost the team quite a bit, but that’s what happens when you have the best cornerback in the league ready to sign an extension.
