Chris Bosh says he’s ‘lucky to be alive’ after mystery health scare

NBA Hall of Famer Chris Bosh revealed on social media Wednesday that he recently experienced a health scare that left him looking at life differently.

Bosh, 41, didn’t provide many details about the scare, saying only that it was “instantaneous,” that he woke up covered in blood as he was getting ready for a date with his wife, and that he had no memory of the incident. The area around the eyes is also noticeably darker.

Bosh recalled:

“So I woke up covered in my own blood. It was crazy. So fast. Instant. No warning. I didn’t have any time to prepare. I was getting ready for a date with my wife, and next thing you know, I fell to the floor.

“I won’t go into details but you can see I’m still recovering [points to face]. I’m not going to try to hide that in case I look different, but it’s a scary thing and it happened so quickly…I’m so lucky I’m back. It was just darkness and nothing else. I walked into the darkness and came back. I don’t remember. I have no memory other than coming back here. So, don’t wait. “

While Bosh didn’t specify what he was dealing with, his history with blood clot issues is notable. His 2014-15 season ended due to a blood clot in his lungs, he never played a full season, and in 2017 the NBA ruled that he could not safely continue playing due to the condition. He tried to return to the league until retiring in 2019.

Bosh wouldn’t say whether the clotting issue was a factor in the recent scare.

What he is saying is that after coming so close to death, he no longer takes life for granted:

“It gave me a different perspective on life, on how things go, what we do for ourselves, what we do for our families, how we live our lives. Whatever happens, make sure you don’t wait. That’s what I take away from it. Don’t wait to take action because it can come fast, it can come fast. I’m lucky to be alive and I feel good about that. Now I’m thinking about how I live my daily life. It does, but don’t wait.

“Don’t wait to take action. You might want to get promoted, you might want to try out for the team, you might want to go on vacation. There’s probably a lot of different things people want to do that we want to do but never do. That’s what I take away from all of this. Don’t wait. You might want to start a business, don’t wait. Just do it. You might be successful, I don’t know.”

Bosh played for the Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat during his career. He was selected to the NBA All-Star 11 times and won two championships with the Heat along with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. He remains the Raptors’ all-time leader in rebounds and blocks and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
