China test launches drone mothership that can carry 100 UAVs

(NewsNation) — China has unveiled the world’s first drone carrier, a 35,000-pound drone capable of deploying more than 100 small drones.

“Jiutian” is the name of China’s large jet-powered aircraft, also known as a drone, which made its first flight on December 11 in the Pucheng area of Shaanxi Province.

Having a drone carrier will allow China to enhance its air military capabilities.

“A key mission of the design is expected to be to serve as a mothership for a constellation of small unmanned aerial systems,” TWZ reported.

It can also play a supporting role in other areas, such as transporting heavy cargo or providing support during natural disasters.

A year ago, the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China unveiled the drone carrier at the Zhuhai Air Show in late 2024.
