chicago – The Chicago suburbs are the largest “boom cities” in Illinois, according to a new analysis of national economic and population growth.

The GOBankingRates study looked at U.S. Census American Community Survey data from 2015 to 2023, considering cities with populations between 25,000 and 500,000.
Plainfield, a suburb southwest of Chicago, leads Illinois, with its population growing nearly 12% over the past eight years to 45,705 people in 2023. The community’s per capita income also increased by 43% during this period.
The largest emerging town in neighboring Indiana is Westfield, which has a population growth of 51.5% and a per capita income growth of nearly 57%.

Nationally, Fulshear, Texas, ranked first with a population growth of 736% between 2015 and 2023.
Other high-ranking emerging cities include Fort Mill, South Carolina; Queen Creek, Arizona; Herriman, Utah; and Windsor, Colorado.
