The National Weather Service updated its winter weather advisory for Central New York on Wednesday as lake effect snow moves into the region.
Snow totals of 2 to 6 inches are expected in the Syracuse area, with the heaviest snowfall Wednesday afternoon and evening.
Higher accumulations are expected further north. Warnings in Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis counties call for 4 to 8 inches of snowfall on the Tugger Mountain Plateau, with 2 to 5 inches less at lower elevations, according to the weather service.
The advice is in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday
A cold air mass moving into the area on Wednesday will trigger lake effect snow starting this afternoon. The heaviest bands will affect lower Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes region.
Forecasters warned that isolated snow storms cannot be ruled out, which could cause brief periods of reduced visibility and gusty winds.
winter weather
Northwesterly winds Wednesday night will move bands of heavier snow into central New York, and high pressure in the area should improve conditions Thursday.
Another weather system will continue Friday night into Saturday, bringing an additional round of snow showers and light accumulations. Model guidance for the system is stronger, prompting forecasters to continue monitoring its development.
A separate system is expected to move across the southern United States from Sunday into Monday, although current guidance suggests it will likely remain south of the region. Rain and snow showers are still possible early next week, with high temperatures rising into the 40s.
