CD Projekt Sells DRM-Free PC Games Storefront GOG to Its Co-Founder for $25.2 Million

The Witcher developer CD Projekt has sold its popular PC gaming storefront GOG to the platform’s co-founder Michał Kiciński in a deal valued at approximately $25.2 million. Kiciński, a co-founder of CD Projekt and a major investor in the company, has acquired 100% of GOG shares, the Polish company said in a statement on Monday.

GOG, a popular digital distribution platform for DRM-free games, will operate independently under new ownership and continue to publish DRM-free games. The deal will not affect players’ accounts and libraries on GOG – “same access, same offline installer, same sense of ownership,” a blog post on GOG’s website said.

Kiciński will acquire 100% of the platform for PLN 90.7 million or $25.2 million (approximately Rs. 226.5 billion). He will not sell any of his shares in CD Projekt to finance the acquisition. In its announcement, CD Projekt also confirmed that following the sale, it had signed a distribution deal with GOG, which includes plans to release the studio’s upcoming games on the storefront. CD Projekt Red is currently developing a number of AAA games, including “The Witcher 4” and “Cyberpunk 2”.

GOG “very good”

“We are now fully focused on our ambitious growth roadmap and expanding our franchise with new high-quality products, and we feel now is the perfect time to make this move,” said CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski. “GOG has been operating independently for a long time. It is now in very good hands – and we are confident that with the support of Michał Kiciński, one of GOG’s co-founders, its future will be filled with great projects and success.”

Kiciński hinted at GOG’s plans for next year, saying he’s involved in the development of several games that will make a “strong debut” on the platform in 2026.

Kiciński said in a statement: “CD PROJEKT and GOG share the same roots and values: freedom, independence and a true sense of ownership. I am confident that CD PROJEKT, with its great AAA games, will continue to support GOG products, making GOG the best place in the world to buy The Witcher and Cyberpunk games, both existing games and new ones that we are all very excited about.”

Kiciński co-founded GOG in 2008 with the vision of publishing DRM-free video games on the PC platform. DRM, short for Digital Rights Management, regulates legal access to digital media to protect copyright. GOG has been operating under the CD Projekt Group for more than 17 years, bringing PC gamers DRM-free versions of the company’s games, such as The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077.
