CCPA Sends Notice to Uber, Ola Over Pricing Disparity on Apple, Android Phones

India’s Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi posted on X on Thursday that Indian government agencies have issued notices to online ride-hailing companies Ola and Uber over alleged differential pricing of Android and Apple phones.

The move comes after multiple reports in local media that users complained on social media that iPhone users were being charged more for the same journey than those using phones running the Android operating system.

The minister said he will direct the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) to also look into differential pricing strategies used by other industries, including food delivery and online ticketing portals.

Ola and Uber did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

India is one of Uber’s biggest markets outside the United States and Canada, where it competes with SoftBank-backed Ola, local rival Rapido and all-electric ride-hailing app BluSmart.

Joshi last month called differential pricing an “unfair trade practice” and a “blatant disregard” for consumer rights.
