Cardinals release Kyler Murray, clearing way for Jets to make an offer

Kyler Murray is considered a possible quarterback target for the New York Jets this offseason. Well, the path to action couldn’t be clearer for Darren Muggie and Aaron Glen. The Jets don’t even need to trade Murray. The Arizona Cardinals released the Pro Bowl quarterback from his contract earlier this week.

It’s shocking that the Cardinals won’t be able to get any draft compensation back for Murray, but his contract makes negotiations difficult. Being able to sign Murray in free agency should make him more attractive to Mudgee. The Jets prefer to keep their NFL draft picks throughout the rebuilding process, so that’s an advantage.

Murray becomes arguably the best quarterback in free agency. Malik Willis has generated a lot of interest and discussion, but he has appeared in four NFL games, starting one in 2025. Murray’s sample size as a quality starting quarterback is much larger.

The Jets need a new starting quarterback after the Justin Fields experiment failed spectacularly. The Jets have no immediate options in the 2026 NFL Draft as they own the No. 2 pick in the draft in Fernando Mendoza. Signing a veteran like Murray would provide a legitimate bridge for Aaron Glenn to build a more competitive team.

Murray, 28, is a proven free agent quarterback. The Minnesota Vikings, hoping to compete with JJ McCarthy, may also be in the running for Murray. The Jets should be aggressive because they don’t have a better quarterback option this summer.
