Playing on the basketball team was one of the things that drew Russell to Syracuse instead of his hometown of Miami.
The 6-foot-5, 190-pound freshman averaged 15.2 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists in his final season at Miami Northwest High School. In the quarterfinals of the state playoffs against Somerset Academy, Russell scored 38 points and grabbed 19 rebounds.
His mother, Chanivia Broussard, also played four years of basketball at the University of Miami, where she scored 1,482 points, ranked third on the Hurricanes’ all-time blocks list with 132 points and was inducted into the Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
On the court, Russell will join the Orange’s freshman class that includes Keyon Anthony, son of Carmelo Anthony, and highly regarded 2025 rookie Saddiq White. Russell will also join a star-studded cast of former Orange athletes such as Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, John Mackey and Donovan McNabb.
The Syracuse University basketball team currently has a record of 11 wins and 5 losses. On the football field, Russell will join a team that struggled last season, going 3-9 and losing its final eight games.
