ISLAMABAD (AP) — A gas cylinder exploded after a wedding reception at a residence in Pakistan’s capital early Sunday, killing at least eight people, including the bride and groom, police and officials said.

According to Islamabad police, guests who had gathered to celebrate the couple were sleeping in the house when the blast occurred, causing part of the house to collapse. Seven people were injured.

The explosion occurred in a residential area in the city center, police said in a statement. Government official Sahibzada Yousaf said authorities had been alerted to the blast earlier on Sunday and were still investigating. Some nearby homes were also damaged, he said.

The office of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a statement saying it was saddened by the victims and expressed its condolences to the families of the victims. He directed health authorities to ensure the injured received the best possible treatment and ordered a full investigation.

Due to low natural gas pressure, many Pakistani households rely on LPG cylinders, which have been linked to fatal accidents caused by gas leaks. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
