Bricks rain down as Downtown El Paso building collapses

The facade of a building collapsed in downtown El Paso, raining bricks onto the sidewalk, but no injuries were reported, a police spokesman said.

El Paso Police Department spokesman Adrian Cisneros said in a media release that at approximately 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, first responders responded to the collapse in the 800 block of South El Paso Street, which is lined with stores serving cross-border shoppers.

Cisneros added that contrary to some inaccurate news reports, no vehicle crashed into the building, explaining that a vehicle at the scene was hit by debris.

The red brick building appears to have two floors, with large ornate windows on the second floor. Police cordoned off the street as a precaution.

The building was vacant at the time and no injuries were reported, El Paso Fire Department spokesman Hector Gonzalez said in an email. The building’s address is 805 S. El Paso St.

“At this time, we do not have details on how the collapse occurred. We are currently investigating,” Gonzalez said.

There have been no reports of casualties. Authorities asked the public to stay away from the area.
