Dec. 14—With three sectional champions and 10 varsity spots, Flathead narrowly placed second at the Flathead Girls Wrestling Invitational, which concluded Saturday.
Defending state champion Billings Senior won with 271.5 points behind champions Bella Downing (120 pounds), Julia Kay (130 pounds) and Kiera Lackey (135 pounds).

Billings West defeated Class A Ronan 185.5 to 184.5 for third place. Butt was fifth at 170 and Poulsen was sixth at 142.
Glacier ranked 15th with 67.5 points in the event, which brought 330 wrestlers to Gene Boyle Gym for the two-day event.
“I thought our girls really came together,” Flatheads coach Amber Downing said. “Julia Kay was named Outstanding Wrestler for the difficulty and size of her wrestling class.”
“It’s so cool to see the Hard Luck mat, where a lot of young girls are making their first move and have all the support from the team.”
Including consolation points, Flathead scored 337.5 and Senior scored 290.5.

State champions who won the heavyweight title Saturday include Helena Capital’s Taylor Lay (125) and Senior’s Meadow Mahlmeister (145). Last year, Kay lost to Ray in the 130-pound finals at state.
Bella Downing was knocked down three times and received a technical fall; Kay was knocked down four times after her first opponent was sidelined with injury. The Stooges had five pins.
Not to be outdone, Sam Bennetts finished fourth with a score of 126, with a record of 6-2 and five pints of beer.
Ronan’s River Cote won the 105th championship, and in addition to her, the girls team has six spots in the top six.
Glacier’s Keria Oftedahl placed third at 100, which was won by Polson’s Ciri Nice. Katelyn Spuhler also finished sixth for the Wolfpack with a score of 105.

“It seemed like all of our visiting teams were happy with the way we were operating,” Amber Downing said, noting the game ended early Friday and ended on time Saturday.
“For some, it was their first chance to finish and they rose to the challenge. I’m excited to see them grow throughout the season.”
