The Atlanta Braves knew going into the offseason that they might be in need of another starting pitcher. However, the Warriors did not make that move, likely due to the organization being selective with potential additions. Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos has made it clear he wants a pitcher who can start in the postseason.

“We’ve explored the starting rotation, adding and acquiring some type of starter, whether it’s a trade or a signing. We’re hoping it’s an impact guy, a guy that we think can start the playoffs,” Anthopoulos said.
Now, with the Braves dealing with a series of injuries to their rotation, they may be happy to add any reliable arm. First, Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep also went down with injuries. Most recently, Joey Wentz was ruled out for the season.
ESPN wrote: “Atlanta Braves left-handed pitcher Joey Wentz lost his chance at the 2026 season with an awkward step. Wentz tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Sunday’s first base game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the club said Monday. It was initially hoped Wentz would avoid serious injury, but further tests revealed a torn ligament.”
A trade could be the route Atlanta chooses, which wouldn’t be surprising given Anthopoulos’ history of making aggressive moves. One name to watch is Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins.

“The Marlins moved two veteran starters this offseason (Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers) but retained Alcantara, who was a prime trade candidate last winter and at last year’s trade deadline. He remains in Miami. How long will this last? Considering his $17 million salary this year and $2,100 next year With a $10,000 club option, I don’t think interested teams would give up more to get two playoff spots for Alcantara instead of one, making a trade this summer more likely,” CBS Sports’ Mike Arcisa wrote.
Acquiring Alcantara would be a risk worth taking for the Braves, especially given his success at the major league level. Last season wasn’t his best as he worked his way back from injury, but this year will mark a fully healthy season.
Atlanta desperately needs a starter, and Alcantara is a familiar pitcher. The Warriors face difficulties this season, but if they can’t keep their rotation healthy, they may have a hard time achieving their goals.
